Struggling is not failing

The definitions of “empowered” and “struggling” are important to understand as we move forward. Being empowered is something we build up to, it is not something that is inherent in all people and it is not easy to attain. It is also fluid and changing, we can feel empowered one day (or one moment) and not the next. That is why the distinction of “struggling” is so important.

But what does it mean to struggle? Let’s look at that definition again…

Miriam Webster defines “Struggling” as:

1: to make strenuous or violent efforts in the face of difficulties or opposition

2: to proceed with difficulty or with great effort

I want you to notice what is not in either of those definitions… failure.

Struggling does not mean failing. It means we are fighting, clawing, pushing through. It means we are working to become better. It is something that is pretty much GUARANTEED to be part of the empowerment journey.

So let me leave you with this. What do you fight for? What does your struggle look like? WHY do you struggle? Understanding our “Why” is important for maintaining our motivation.

Until next time, take care!

My name is Liza McFarland. I’m a licensed professional counselor and I focus on issues related to self-image and identity. This area is close to my heart because I've spent most of my life dealing with weight, self-compassion, and identity issues. I had no idea where I belonged. I still struggle sometimes but have learned to give myself the space to stumble and grow as I go. Join me in feeling liberated to be whoever you are… and learn to love the quirks. As a licensed therapist, I love helping people understand themselves and grow as individuals. As a toddler mom and wife, I like to have fun with my family anywhere outside. As an individual, I practice yoga, do a plethora of crafts, read and watch sci-fi, and generally try to goof off every chance I get.
